A satirical lithograph by Adolph Dehn, capturing the contrast between religious figures and the fashionable crowd of 1930s New York.
Adolph Dehn was a master of the lithographic medium, known for his sharp observations of urban life during the early twentieth century. In Broadway Parade, he captures a distinct New York moment, juxtaposing the solemn, dark habits of a group of nuns against the fashionable, eccentric figures of the city's theatre district. The composition relies on the contrast between the heavy, rounded forms of the religious figures and the elongated, stylised silhouettes of the surrounding crowd.
Dehn utilised the tonal range of lithography to create a sense of depth and atmosphere. The soft, velvety blacks of the nuns' garments anchor the scene, while the lighter, sketchier treatment of the background figures suggests the bustling, transient nature of Broadway. His approach to caricature is evident in the exaggerated features of the onlookers, who appear almost doll-like in their expressions. This work reflects the artist's interest in the social dynamics of the city, where disparate worlds collide in public spaces. By focusing on the visual friction between these groups, Dehn provides a commentary on the varied characters that defined the metropolitan experience of the 1930s. The print demonstrates his technical proficiency, particularly in his ability to manipulate light and shadow to define form without relying on rigid outlines. It is a characteristic example of his satirical output, which often found humour in the contradictions of modern American society.
