A satirical lithograph by Gustave Doré depicting urban figures on a staircase, reflecting the social commentary of mid-nineteenth-century Paris.
This lithograph, titled Vautours (Vultures), is a characteristic example of the social satire produced by Gustave Doré during his early career in Paris. Doré, better known for his later literary illustrations, began his professional life as a caricaturist for journals such as the Journal pour rire. This work displays his sharp observational skills and his ability to capture the social tensions of the mid-nineteenth century.
The composition is divided into two distinct scenes, both set upon a staircase. On the left, a pregnant woman descends with two children, while a man stands in the doorway behind them. On the right, a stout, well-dressed man in a top hat and frock coat descends with a cane, his expression one of grim determination or perhaps predatory focus. The title, Vautours, suggests a biting commentary on the nature of the figures depicted. In the context of the era, the term was often applied to those who profited from the misfortune of others, such as unscrupulous landlords, debt collectors, or predatory lawyers.
Doré employs a fluid, sketch-like line quality that captures the movement of the figures and the atmosphere of the urban interior. The shading is achieved through varied hatching, which provides volume to the clothing and depth to the architectural setting. The work avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the posture and facial expressions of the subjects to convey their character. As a piece of social commentary, it reflects the anxieties of urban life in Paris, where the divide between the vulnerable and the opportunistic was a frequent subject for artists and writers alike. The print remains a compelling example of the satirical tradition that flourished in the French press during the Second Empire.
