Franz Marc's 'Broken Forms', created in 1914, is an abstract Expressionist painting featuring fragmented shapes and swirling lines in a palette of blues, reds, yellows, and greens.
Franz Marc, a leading figure in German Expressionism, created 'Broken Forms' in 1914. Marc, along with Wassily Kandinsky, formed the group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), which sought to express spiritual truths through abstract forms and colour. Marc was particularly interested in animals as symbols of purity and naturalness. However, as his career progressed, his work became increasingly abstract, reflecting a desire to move beyond the representational. 'Broken Forms' exemplifies this later style. The painting features a composition of fragmented shapes and swirling lines in a palette of blues, reds, yellows, and greens. The forms suggest organic shapes, perhaps alluding to animals or natural elements, but they are rendered in a non-representational manner. The painting conveys a sense of dynamism and emotional intensity, characteristic of Expressionist art. The 'breaking' of forms may also reflect the fracturing of the world in the lead-up to World War I, during which Marc was killed in action.
