A striking lithograph by German Expressionist Otto Mueller, featuring a serene brook rendered with bold, gestural lines and high-contrast ink.
Otto Mueller, a member of the Die Brücke group, produced this lithograph during his mature period. The work displays his characteristic economy of line and focus on simplified, rhythmic forms. Mueller often favoured the medium of lithography for its ability to capture the immediacy of his drawing style, allowing for a direct translation of his vision onto the stone.
The composition depicts a quiet waterway, framed by dense, dark vegetation in the foreground. The artist employs bold, gestural strokes to define the banks and the reeds, creating a sense of movement within the stillness of the scene. The contrast between the heavy black ink and the warm, neutral tone of the paper provides a structural clarity that is typical of his graphic output. Unlike the more aggressive or angular works of some of his contemporaries in the German Expressionist movement, Mueller's approach here remains lyrical and balanced.
In this print, the artist avoids unnecessary detail, choosing instead to suggest the atmosphere of the brook through the interplay of light and shadow. The forms are reduced to their essential shapes, which guide the viewer's eye along the winding path of the water towards the distant horizon. The signature, visible at the bottom, confirms the work as a deliberate exploration of his preferred themes of nature and human connection to the environment. This piece offers a clear example of how Mueller utilised printmaking to explore the expressive potential of simplified forms and tonal contrast, maintaining a consistent aesthetic throughout his career.
