A decorative illustration by Bernard Willem Wierink depicting a scene from the medieval Reynard the Fox epic, featuring calligraphic text and Art Nouveau framing.
This illustration by Bernard Willem Wierink depicts a scene from the medieval beast epic, Van den vos Reynaerde (Reynard the Fox). The composition is divided into two primary narrative registers, framed by decorative, flowing borders characteristic of the Art Nouveau period. In the upper oval, the bear Bruin encounters Reynard near the entrance to his den, Maupertuus. The lower section features a group of foxes, rendered with a focus on character and posture rather than strict anatomical realism.
Wierink integrates Middle Dutch text directly into the design, treating the calligraphy as a visual element that balances the illustrative panels. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on earthy tones for the animals and parchment-like washes for the text blocks, contrasted by the cool blue of the ornamental frame. The line quality is calligraphic, showing the artist's background in decorative arts and graphic design. Wierink, a Dutch artist and educator, often drew inspiration from folklore and historical literature, applying a stylised approach that prioritises rhythmic lines and balanced page layout.
The work reflects the early twentieth-century interest in reviving medieval storytelling through a modern, decorative lens. By combining the narrative of the trickster fox with an aesthetic influenced by book illumination, Wierink creates a cohesive page that functions as both a storybook illustration and a graphic design piece. The fox, a recurring figure in European fables, is portrayed here with a sense of cunning, while the bear appears as a foil to his cleverness. This print captures the specific charm of Wierink's approach to narrative art, where the text and image exist in a symbiotic relationship, inviting the viewer to engage with both the story and the craftsmanship of the page design.
