A refined woodblock print by Ohara Koson, featuring a bull-headed shrike observing a spider in its web, rendered in the traditional kacho-ga style.
This woodblock print by Ohara Koson depicts a bull-headed shrike perched upon a branch, observing a spider suspended in its web. Koson was a master of the kacho-ga genre, which focuses on the representation of birds and flowers. His work often captures quiet, observational moments in nature, utilising a refined colour palette and precise line work to convey the stillness of the scene.
The composition is balanced, with the bird positioned in the upper right, its gaze directed downward toward the spider. The background features a subtle, atmospheric grey wash, which provides a sense of depth and focus on the primary subjects. The spider web is rendered with delicate, thin lines, contrasting with the more solid, darker forms of the bird and the branch. This print demonstrates the technical skill of the Shin-hanga movement, which sought to revitalise traditional Japanese printmaking techniques by incorporating Western influences regarding light and perspective.
Koson produced numerous prints for the publisher Matsuki Heikichi, who was instrumental in the distribution of his work during the early twentieth century. The print reflects the artist's ability to observe natural behaviour with accuracy, while maintaining a decorative quality typical of the period. The inclusion of the falling leaf adds a sense of movement and seasonal transition to the otherwise static composition. This piece is a representative example of the artist's output, showing his characteristic attention to the textures of feathers and the fragility of the web.
