A Helen Frankenthaler abstract expressionist painting titled "Bullseye", featuring her signature soak-stain technique with diffused shapes and colours.
Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) was an American Abstract Expressionist painter. She was a major contributor to the history of postwar American painting. Frankenthaler exhibited her work for over six decades. She had a style that shifted from Abstract Expressionism to Colour Field painting. She was among the first generation of postwar artists who were influenced primarily by Cubism. Frankenthaler's work is characterised by its spontaneity and fluidity. She often used a technique called 'soak-stain', pouring thinned paint onto unprimed canvas, allowing the colours to soak into the fabric. This method created luminous, translucent effects and blurred the boundaries between colour and surface. In "Bullseye", Frankenthaler employs her signature soak-stain technique to create a composition of soft, diffused shapes and colours. The painting features a central orange circle, reminiscent of a bullseye target, surrounded by washes of yellow, pink, and green. The colours blend and bleed into one another, creating a sense of depth and movement. The overall effect is one of ethereal beauty and atmospheric abstraction.
