Description
Bungay in Suffolk preserves the ruins of a powerful medieval castle, with paired stone towers standing above green lawns and town roofs in the broad Waveney landscape.
Bungay's castle was closely associated with the Bigod family, whose members also held Framlingham and the title Earl of Norfolk. Surviving remains include the keep, gatehouse and curtain walls, making the site an important record of medieval military building in Suffolk.
Two rounded stone towers dominate the scene, their broken tops and rough surfaces warmed by direct sunlight. Ivy descends one flank, contrasting with the pale masonry and darker gaps below. Beyond the ruins, red roofs and white houses rise among trees, with a square church tower on the right. Leaf shadows cross the short grass, and a full canopy overhead suggests summer.
