A detail from the Legend of the True Cross cycle, this fresco displays the precise geometry and sculptural figures characteristic of Piero della Francesca.
This detail is taken from the cycle of frescoes depicting the Legend of the True Cross, located in the Basilica of San Francesco in Arezzo. Piero della Francesca executed this work between 1452 and 1466. The scene illustrates the burial of the beam that would later become the cross used for the crucifixion of Christ.
Piero della Francesca is known for his mathematical approach to painting, which is evident in the precise geometry of the figures and the clarity of the composition. The figures are rendered with a sculptural quality, their forms defined by light and shadow rather than heavy outlines. The artist uses a cool, controlled palette, favouring soft greys, whites, and muted earth tones. The focus remains on the physical weight of the timber and the deliberate movements of the men carrying it.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who prioritised emotional drama, Piero della Francesca maintains a sense of stillness and order. The figures possess a calm, almost detached expression, which directs the viewer to the structural arrangement of the scene. The drapery of the clothing is handled with great attention to volume, showing the influence of his interest in perspective and spatial depth. This fresco remains a primary example of the Quattrocento style, where the synthesis of humanism and religious narrative is achieved through rigorous formal discipline. The work is celebrated for its technical mastery and its contribution to the development of perspective in Western art.
