Description
Burn o' Vat cuts into the woodland of Muir of Dinnet in Aberdeenshire, where glacial meltwater carved a great rock hollow now reached through a narrow gap beside the stream.
Within the Cairngorms National Park, Muir of Dinnet preserves landforms left by melting glaciers. The Vat is a large cauldron shaped pothole, ground out by moving water carrying stones, with a narrow rock entrance and the present burn flowing through the gorge.
Burn o' Vat appears here as a tall rocky passage containing brown shallow water and a jumble of angular boulders. Pale trunks rise through fresh green foliage above the left wall, while the right rock face stands in cooler shade. A strip of blue sky opens overhead. The leafy canopy and strong light suggest summer within this enclosed woodland scene.
