A delicate Shijo school hanging scroll depicting bush clover, grasses, and a cricket, rendered with fluid ink and soft colour on silk.
Matsumura Keibun was a prominent figure of the Shijo school in Kyoto, a movement known for its focus on direct observation of nature combined with a soft, lyrical approach to brushwork. This hanging scroll, titled Bush Clover, Grass and Cricket, demonstrates the artist's mastery of the Kacho-ga tradition, which translates to bird-and-flower painting. The composition is sparse, allowing the negative space of the silk to suggest the atmosphere of an autumn day.
The work features a delicate arrangement of bush clover (hagi) and tall grasses, rendered with fluid, calligraphic strokes. The ink washes provide subtle depth to the leaves, while the soft pinks of the clover blossoms add a gentle touch of colour. A small cricket is positioned on a blade of grass, a common motif in Japanese art that signifies the changing seasons and the quietude of the natural world. Keibun avoids rigid outlines, preferring to build form through the modulation of ink density and the controlled application of pigment.
As a practitioner of the Shijo style, Keibun sought to capture the essence of his subjects rather than their exact physical dimensions. The result is a work that feels spontaneous yet carefully considered. The balance between the verticality of the grasses and the horizontal spread of the clover creates a sense of harmony. This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the appreciation of transient beauty and the subtle shifts in the environment were central to artistic practice. The scroll format itself dictates the viewing experience, encouraging a slow, meditative engagement with the imagery as it is unfurled. It remains a fine example of the technical skill and observational sensitivity characteristic of the Kyoto art circles during the early 19th century.
