A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Jan Lievens, depicting a young man in profile with flowing hair and a pleated collar.
This etching by Jan Lievens captures a young man in profile, a format that allows the artist to focus on the silhouette and the texture of the subject. Lievens, a contemporary and associate of Rembrandt in Leiden, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the varied line work used to define the subject's voluminous, curly hair. The etching needle creates a sense of movement within the locks, contrasting with the more restrained, precise lines used for the facial features and the stiff, pleated collar.
The composition is sparse, typical of the tronies and character studies produced by artists in the Dutch Golden Age. By isolating the head and shoulders against a plain background, Lievens directs the viewer to the psychological presence of the sitter. The inclusion of the monogram 'IL' and the publisher's mark 'P. de Balliu exc' in the lower right corner provides evidence of the print's circulation during the seventeenth century. The work reflects the interest in physiognomy and character types that occupied many artists of the period, who sought to explore human expression through the medium of printmaking.
Lievens was known for his experimental approach to etching, often employing a free, sketch-like quality that differed from the more polished engravings of his peers. This print serves as an example of his ability to convey texture and form through minimal means. The light falls across the profile, creating subtle shadows that give volume to the face and neck. The print remains a clear representation of the stylistic concerns of the Leiden school, where the study of light and the human form were central to the artistic practice of the era.
