A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II, depicting Milonia Caesonia, the wife of the Roman Emperor Caligula, set against classical ruins.
This engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II depicts Milonia Caesonia, the fourth wife of the Roman Emperor Caligula. Sadeler, a member of a prominent family of Flemish engravers, was active in Prague during the reign of Rudolf II. His technical proficiency is evident in the precise handling of the burin, which creates a range of textures from the soft folds of the drapery to the metallic sheen of the clasp securing her mantle.
The composition follows the conventions of late sixteenth-century portraiture, placing the subject in a three-quarter view against a backdrop of classical ruins. The inclusion of these architectural elements suggests a connection to the Roman past, a common theme in the humanist circles of the period. Caesonia is presented with a composed expression, her hair styled in tight curls, reflecting the idealised aesthetic of the era. The Latin inscription at the base provides historical context, identifying the subject and offering a brief poetic commentary on her character and association with the emperor.
Sadeler was known for his ability to translate the works of other masters into print, yet this piece demonstrates his own skill in composition and line work. The contrast between the light on the subject's face and the deeper shadows of the background creates a sense of volume. The print serves as an example of the high level of craftsmanship found in European printmaking at the turn of the seventeenth century. It remains a study in the intersection of classical history and the artistic sensibilities of the Northern Mannerist tradition.
