A dramatic study of the biblical conflict between Cain and Abel, rendered in pen, ink, and wash by the Italian Mannerist artist Domenico Passignano.
This drawing by Domenico Passignano depicts the biblical narrative of Cain and Abel. The composition captures the moment of violence, with Cain poised to strike his brother using the jawbone of an ass. Passignano, a Florentine artist active during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, employs a dynamic approach to the human form, characteristic of the Mannerist tradition. The figures exhibit elongated proportions and muscular tension, which serve to heighten the dramatic intensity of the scene.
The artist uses pen and brown ink to define the contours of the bodies, while brown wash provides depth and volume through subtle shading. The background includes a suggestion of an altar, linking the act to the preceding narrative of the rejected sacrifice. The focus remains on the physical struggle between the two brothers, with the anatomy rendered through fluid, expressive lines. Passignano was known for his ability to manage complex figural arrangements, a skill evident in the way the bodies interlock within the frame.
This work demonstrates the technical proficiency of Italian draughtsmanship from the period. The use of wash creates a sense of atmosphere, softening the sharp edges of the ink lines and providing a cohesive tonal quality. The drawing functions as a study of movement and emotional expression, capturing the aggression of the attacker and the vulnerability of the victim. It is a representative example of how artists of the era approached Old Testament themes, prioritising the physical and psychological weight of the encounter. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the character of the piece, allowing the viewer to appreciate the hand of the artist in the marks left on the surface.
