A hand-coloured engraving of a black-tailed jackrabbit by John James Audubon, taken from his series *Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America*. The illustration showcases Audubon's skill as a naturalist and artist.
John James Audubon (1785-1851) was an American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter, notable for his expansive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats. His major work, *The Birds of America* (1827-1839), is a collection of 435 life-size prints. Audubon also embarked on a similar project documenting North American mammals, resulting in *Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America*, published between 1845 and 1849. 'California Hare' is a hand-coloured engraving from this later series. It depicts a black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) in its natural environment. The hare is shown in profile, its long ears erect, surrounded by grasses and a backdrop of distant hills. The illustration is detailed and scientifically accurate, reflecting Audubon's naturalist approach. The colours are muted and naturalistic, with browns, greys, and greens dominating the palette. The composition is simple, focusing attention on the animal and its immediate surroundings.
