A detailed hand-coloured engraving of a California Hare (black-tailed jackrabbit) by John James Audubon, known for his extensive studies and illustrations of American birds and mammals in their natural habitats.
John James Audubon (1785-1851) was an American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter, notable for his extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats. His major work, *The Birds of America*, is a collection of 435 life-size prints. Audubon also had plans to illustrate the mammals of North America. He began work on *Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America* in 1841, in collaboration with John Bachman. The project was continued by Bachman's sons after Audubon's death. This hand-coloured engraving depicts a California Hare, also known as the black-tailed jackrabbit. The hare is shown in profile, its long ears erect and alert. The animal's fur is a mix of browns and blacks, providing camouflage against the grassy and scrubby background. The hare is surrounded by vegetation, with a hint of a distant, hazy background suggesting its natural habitat. The print is detailed, capturing the texture of the fur and the surrounding foliage.
