A still life by Max Pechstein, this painting features calla lilies in vases, rendered in bold colours and expressive brushstrokes typical of the Expressionist movement.
Max Pechstein (1881-1955) was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker. A member of the Die Brücke group, Pechstein's work is characterised by bold colours, simplified forms, and an interest in primitivism. He sought to express emotional experience through his art, often depicting figures and scenes from nature. His career was disrupted by the rise of the Nazi regime, which condemned his work as degenerate. After the Second World War, he continued to paint and teach, remaining a significant figure in German Expressionism. This still life painting features two vases of calla lilies set against a background of loosely defined planes in shades of blue, brown, and peach. The lilies themselves are rendered with broad brushstrokes, their white petals contrasting with the green stems and leaves. One vase is a simple green, while the other is decorated with blue floral motifs. The composition is dynamic, with the diagonal lines of the background creating a sense of movement. The painting's colour palette and brushwork are typical of Pechstein's Expressionist style.
