A fine example of Nasta'liq calligraphy by the master Mir Emad Hassani, featuring elegant script set within a decorative, gold-illuminated border.
This piece displays the Nasta'liq script, a style of Persian calligraphy that reached its zenith during the Safavid period. Mir Emad Hassani remains the most celebrated master of this form, known for his precise control of the reed pen and the balanced proportions of his letterforms. The work features lines of poetry set against a background of gold-flecked paper, surrounded by floral illumination.
The composition follows traditional manuscript conventions, with the text block framed by multiple borders. The upper section contains a decorative headpiece, or sarlowh, featuring vegetal motifs painted in blue, gold, and red. The calligraphy itself demonstrates the characteristic fluidity of the Nasta'liq style, where the strokes vary in weight to create a rhythmic visual flow. The letters are arranged to occupy the space with a sense of equilibrium, reflecting the discipline required to master this script.
The surrounding margins are decorated with delicate floral patterns, which provide a frame for the central text. The paper shows signs of age, with a warm, aged tone that complements the gold leaf used in the illumination. This type of work was typically produced for royal or aristocratic patrons, intended for inclusion in a muraqqa, or album of calligraphy and paintings. The technical execution shows the high level of craftsmanship associated with the workshops of the period, where calligraphers and illuminators collaborated to produce works of exceptional quality. The preservation of such pieces allows for a study of the aesthetic values of the Safavid court, where the written word was held in high regard as both a literary and visual art form.
