A fine example of Ming Dynasty calligraphy by Zhou Tianqiu, executed in ink on a traditional folding fan format.
Zhou Tianqiu was a prominent scholar and calligrapher during the Ming Dynasty, active in the Suzhou region. This work presents a fine example of his mastery of the clerical and running scripts, applied to the challenging format of a folding fan. The text is arranged in vertical columns that follow the radial structure of the fan ribs, demonstrating a high degree of technical control and spatial awareness.
The ink remains legible against the aged, warm-toned paper, which has acquired a characteristic patina over the centuries. Zhou Tianqiu is known for his individualistic approach to brushwork, often favouring a fluid, rhythmic quality that balances structure with expressive movement. In this piece, the characters exhibit a consistent weight and deliberate spacing, reflecting the disciplined training expected of a literati artist of the period.
Folding fans were popular vehicles for artistic expression among the Ming elite. They functioned as both personal accessories and portable canvases for poetry or prose. The choice of text often revealed the owner's literary interests or philosophical leanings. This specific composition displays the artist's ability to adapt his script to the fan's curved surface without compromising the legibility or the aesthetic harmony of the characters. The work provides a glimpse into the cultural life of the late Ming period, where calligraphy was a primary medium for intellectual exchange and artistic display. It remains a representative specimen of the Suzhou school's output, which prioritised elegance and technical refinement in the tradition of earlier masters.
