A 1920 lithograph by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita featuring a camellia bloom and bud, framed by a decorative border.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was a Dutch graphic artist known for his mastery of woodcuts and lithography. This work, dated 1920, demonstrates his ability to balance naturalistic observation with decorative framing. The composition centres on a camellia bloom, accompanied by a single bud on the left, set against a dark, textured background that pushes the floral elements forward.
De Mesquita often employed a stark contrast between light and shadow, a technique visible here in the way the petals emerge from the deep grey field. The surrounding border, with its rhythmic, abstract patterns, reflects the influence of the Art Nouveau movement, which sought to integrate organic forms into structured design. The artist avoids excessive detail, preferring instead to capture the essential form of the plant through clean lines and tonal variation.
His work frequently explored the relationship between the subject and its environment, often using borders to contain or frame the natural world. This lithograph is a clear example of his graphic precision. The interplay between the delicate, light-coloured petals and the heavy, dark ground creates a sense of stillness. De Mesquita's approach to botanical subjects was rarely purely scientific; he treated the plant as a motif, allowing the graphic qualities of the medium to dictate the final appearance of the print. This piece remains a representative example of his output during the early twentieth century, showing his technical control and his eye for balanced, rhythmic composition.
