A refined Japanese surimono woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai, featuring a dual-panel composition of camellia flowers and a scene of spectators at a cockfight.
This woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai belongs to the genre of surimono, which were privately commissioned prints often distributed among members of poetry circles. Shinsai, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, was known for his technical precision and his ability to integrate text with imagery. This particular work is divided into two distinct panels, a common format for surimono that allowed for the juxtaposition of disparate subjects.
The left panel features a botanical study of camellia flowers. The artist renders the blossoms with a focus on their structural form, using subtle colour gradations to suggest the texture of the petals. The right panel depicts a group of people gathered to observe a cockfight. The figures are captured in various states of engagement, their postures conveying the tension of the match. The composition is balanced by the inclusion of calligraphic inscriptions in both sections, which provide context for the poetry associated with the commission.
Surimono prints are distinguished by their high production quality, often utilising expensive pigments, embossing, and metallic dusts. This piece reflects the refined aesthetic preferences of the Edo period literati. The muted background tones allow the specific colours of the camellias and the garments of the spectators to emerge with clarity. The work functions as a visual record of the cultural activities and artistic interests of the time, demonstrating the skill of the carvers and printers who collaborated with Shinsai to produce these limited editions.
