A dreamlike Symbolist depiction of the Cancer constellation, rendered in tempera by Lithuanian artist Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis.
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, a Lithuanian composer and painter, created this work as part of his twelve-part Zodiac cycle in 1907. The series demonstrates his interest in the intersection of music, mythology, and cosmic order. In this composition, the artist depicts the constellation of Cancer within a nocturnal, atmospheric setting. The sky is rendered in muted, layered tones, suggesting a vast and quiet space. A cluster of stars forms the recognisable shape of the crab, suspended above a dark, architectural silhouette.
The foreground features heavy, dark rock formations that anchor the composition, providing a stark contrast to the ethereal quality of the celestial elements above. A bridge or structural element extends from the right, leading the eye across the frame and connecting the terrestrial foreground to the distant, hazy horizon. The use of tempera allows for a soft, matte finish, which contributes to the dreamlike quality of the scene. Čiurlionis often approached his visual art with the sensibility of a musician, treating colour and form as elements of a larger, rhythmic structure. This piece avoids literal representation, opting instead for a suggestive, symbolic interpretation of the zodiac sign. The interplay between the solid, earthly forms and the delicate, luminous stars creates a sense of stillness and contemplation. This work remains a representative example of his unique approach to Symbolism, where the boundaries between the physical world and the metaphysical realm appear porous and fluid.
