Description
At Capernwray, layered stone arches meet sheltered water and dense Lancashire greenery, an absorbing riverside subject for anyone who enjoys seeing sturdy engineering become part of a gentle country setting.
Three high openings in the viaduct reveal patches of hillside between its piers. Beneath them, a low humpback crossing sits close to green-blue reflections, with another small arch glimpsed farther away. Sunlight catches pale blocks along the parapets, and white flowers emerge from long leaves at the lower left.
Capernwray feels enclosed by foliage without losing the height of its masonry. The successive crossings give the eye several distances to explore, from the close banks to the open countryside behind the tallest span. Warm stone colours can anchor a quiet dining area, while the water keeps the substantial structures light enough for easy daily company.
