Frans Hals's portrait of Captain Andries van Hoorn dates to 1638. Hals (1582-1666) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, principally of portraits. He is notable for his loose painterly brushwork, and helped introduce this lively style of painting into Dutch art. He mainly painted individual and group portraits, and was active in Haarlem. This portrait depicts Captain Andries van Hoorn in a dark coat and wide-brimmed black hat. A large, ruffled white collar frames his face. His left arm is bent across his body, and he holds gloves and a baton in his right hand. The background is a muted brown, against which the figure stands out. A coat-of-arms hangs in the upper-right corner. The composition is typical of Hals's portraiture, with a focus on capturing the sitter's likeness and character through expressive brushwork and a dynamic pose.
