Wright, sometimes called Wright of Derby, was an 18th-century English painter known for his use of light and shadow, and for his portraits and industrial scenes. He spent his career in Derby, and also worked in Italy and Bath. In this portrait, Captain Milnes is shown standing in a wooded area. He wears a military uniform with a red sash and holds a hat and walking stick. A groom and horse are visible in the background. The composition uses the trees to frame the figure, while the lighting highlights Milnes's face and uniform. The overall effect is one of formality and authority, typical of portraiture of the period. Wright's skill in rendering textures and fabrics is evident in the details of the uniform and the surrounding foliage.
