An early illustrative work by Umberto Boccioni, depicting the contrast between a modern motorcar and a traditional fox hunt.
This early work by Umberto Boccioni captures a collision between traditional rural pursuits and the encroaching speed of the modern age. The composition presents a light blue motorcar, marked with the number 44, speeding across a field. The vehicle creates a sense of motion through its blurred, swirling wheels and the dust kicked up in its wake. Beside the car, a pack of hounds pursues a fox, a scene that contrasts the mechanical power of the automobile with the traditional sport of the hunt.
Boccioni, who later became a primary figure in the Futurist movement, demonstrates an interest in movement and modern technology even in his earlier illustrative works. The style here is distinct from his later, more fragmented Futurist paintings. It relies on clear outlines and a flatter, more decorative application of colour, reminiscent of the graphic illustration styles popular in European periodicals at the turn of the twentieth century. The muted green background provides a neutral setting that allows the blue of the car and the varied markings of the hounds to remain the primary visual focus.
The artist uses a controlled line to define the figures, while the wash of watercolour adds depth to the forms without obscuring the underlying drawing. The juxtaposition of the horse-mounted hunters in the background and the motorcar in the foreground creates a narrative tension. It reflects a period when the horse was rapidly being replaced by the engine, a theme that would occupy many artists of the era. This print offers a glimpse into the formative years of an artist who would go on to redefine the representation of speed and dynamism in twentieth-century art. The work is signed by the artist in the lower right corner, confirming its authenticity as a piece from his early career.
