A 1920 Cubist still life by Juan Gris, featuring a carafe and book rendered through precise geometric forms and a restrained, earthy colour palette.
Juan Gris, a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism, produced this work in 1920. The composition demonstrates his methodical approach to the still life genre, where objects are broken down into geometric components and reassembled on the canvas. Unlike the fragmented, multi-perspective works of early Cubism, this piece reflects a more ordered, architectural structure.
The painting features a carafe, a book, and a bowl of fruit, arranged upon a table. Gris employs a restricted palette of ochre, slate blue, black, and cream, which allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of form and shadow. The lines are precise, creating a sense of stability that contrasts with the typical dynamism of the movement. The book, shown both open and closed, provides a rhythmic repetition of vertical lines, while the curved silhouette of the carafe offers a counterpoint to the sharp angles of the table and the surrounding space.
Gris was known for his analytical process, often describing his method as a form of deduction. He began with abstract geometric shapes and gradually introduced representational elements until the objects emerged from the composition. This work captures that transition, where the identity of the objects remains clear despite the rigorous geometric discipline applied to their depiction. The flat planes of colour and the deliberate lack of traditional perspective create a shallow pictorial space, forcing the eye to engage with the surface of the canvas rather than an illusion of depth. This print captures the matte texture and the specific tonal balance of the original oil painting, providing a clear view of the artist's calculated approach to composition and his mastery of the Cubist idiom.
