Carp and Waterweeds - Yōgetsu

This hanging scroll, attributed to the Muromachi period artist Yōgetsu, represents the tradition of suibokuga, or ink wash painting. The work features two carp navigating a watery environment, rendered with varying densities of ink to suggest depth and movement. The upper fish is depicted in a downward arc, while the lower fish is shown in profile, surrounded by aquatic vegetation. The composition relies on the economy of the brush, a hallmark of the Zen-influenced aesthetic prevalent in fifteenth-century Japan.

The artist employs a range of tonal values to define the scales and fins of the carp, contrasting the dark, saturated ink of the bodies with the lighter, diluted washes used for the surrounding water and weeds. The inclusion of calligraphy at the top of the scroll provides a literary dimension, common in works of this period where painting and poetry functioned as a unified expression. The paper, aged to a warm, neutral tone, provides a subtle backdrop that allows the monochrome ink to remain the primary focus.

Yōgetsu was a follower of the monk-painter Tenshō Shūbun, and this piece reflects the stylistic lineage of the Shōkoku-ji school.
