A refined seventeenth-century engraving by Pierre Firens featuring a decorative cartouche supported by two putti and adorned with cherubic heads.
This engraving by Pierre Firens presents a decorative cartouche, a form frequently utilised in the seventeenth century for framing inscriptions, coats of arms, or portraits. The composition centres on an empty oval space, designed to accommodate text or imagery, surrounded by a frame that demonstrates the technical precision of the period. Two putti are positioned at the upper corners, their bodies angled to support the structure, while their drapery flows outwards to integrate with the scrollwork of the frame.
Below the central void, a small, cherubic head is nestled within the lower curve of the cartouche, providing a symmetrical balance to the head positioned at the apex. The frame itself incorporates elements of leather-like scrollwork, a common feature in Northern European ornamental prints of the era. The use of cross-hatching and fine line work creates a sense of volume in the figures and depth in the architectural elements of the frame. The presence of the 'Mariette ex.' mark indicates that this print was later published or distributed by the prominent Parisian print-selling family, the Mariettes, who were instrumental in circulating such designs across Europe.
As a piece of ornamental design, this work reflects the period's interest in classical motifs adapted for decorative purposes. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical proportion and expressive detail, typical of the Flemish tradition. The clean, white background of the paper allows the fine lines of the engraving to remain the primary focus, making it a clear example of the graphic arts during the early Baroque period. This print serves as a record of the aesthetic preferences for elaborate, figure-supported frames that were popular in both book illustration and decorative arts during the seventeenth century.
