A painterly study of the medieval Castillo de la Mota by Joaquín Sorolla, capturing the fortress with expressive brushwork and warm, earthen tones.
This work depicts the Castillo de la Mota in Medina del Campo, a medieval fortress in the province of Valladolid, Spain. Joaquín Sorolla, known for his mastery of light and rapid brushwork, captures the structure with a focus on the interplay between the warm, earthen tones of the stone walls and the atmospheric conditions of the sky. The composition is grounded by a foreground of dark, gestural greens and ochre paths, which lead the eye toward the imposing silhouette of the castle.
Sorolla employs a direct, painterly approach, prioritising the immediate impression of the scene over rigid architectural detail. The application of paint is confident and fluid, with visible brushstrokes that define the mass of the fortress against the overcast, grey-toned sky. Small figures are placed to the right, providing a sense of scale and human presence against the historical weight of the fortification. The colour palette is dominated by the contrast between the sun-baked orange hues of the masonry and the cooler, muted tones of the surrounding terrain and sky.
During his career, Sorolla travelled extensively across Spain, documenting its diverse regions and historical sites. This study reflects his interest in the Spanish heritage, often moving away from his more famous beach scenes to explore the rugged, inland geography of the Iberian Peninsula. The work functions as a direct observation of light and form, demonstrating his ability to translate the physical presence of a site into a series of tonal relationships. The lack of excessive detail allows the viewer to focus on the structural integrity of the castle and the specific quality of light present at the moment of creation.
