A detailed etching of the medieval fortress of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte in Normandy, created by British artist John Sell Cotman in 1822.
This etching by John Sell Cotman depicts the medieval fortress of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte in Normandy. Produced for his publication, 'Architectural Antiquities of Normandy', the work reflects the artist's meticulous approach to topographical documentation. Cotman travelled to France on three occasions between 1817 and 1820, gathering sketches that would later be translated into these precise, monochromatic prints.
The composition focuses on the imposing silhouette of the castle, which rises above the surrounding foliage. Cotman employs a disciplined system of lines to define the stone masonry, the textures of the earth, and the reflective surface of the water in the foreground. The sky is rendered with lighter, more open strokes, providing a sense of atmospheric depth that balances the density of the architectural forms. The inclusion of small figures near the water provides a sense of scale, grounding the massive structure within the physical environment.
As a member of the Norwich School of painters, Cotman possessed a keen eye for the structural integrity of buildings. His work in this series demonstrates a transition from his earlier, more experimental watercolour techniques toward a rigorous, analytical style suited for printmaking. The etching captures the ruinous state of the castle with clarity, avoiding romanticised embellishment in favour of accurate representation. This print offers a view into the historical architecture of Northern France during the early nineteenth century, preserved through the technical precision of a master etcher.
