Description
Castle Tioram in the western Highlands stands alone above turquoise water, its broken stone crown set against russet island slopes and low hills beneath a bright autumn sky.
Castle Tioram occupies the tidal island of Eilean Tioram in Loch Moidart, north of Acharacle. The ruined fortress is the traditional seat of Clanranald, a branch of Clan Donald. Its position once controlled the approach from the sea towards Loch Shiel, despite being hidden from open water.
A pale curtain wall rises from a rocky islet, with roofless gables and uneven battlements cutting into the sky. Rust red scrub and ochre grass cover the low island beneath it. The surrounding loch is calm, its teal surface crossed by long soft reflections. A dark pine branch enters from the left above foreground rocks, framing the autumnal view from the mainland shore.
