A detailed 1820 etching by Johann Christian Reinhart depicting cattle crossing a stream in a quiet, pastoral setting.
Johann Christian Reinhart, a German artist who spent the majority of his career in Rome, produced this etching in 1820. The work demonstrates his mastery of the pastoral tradition, a genre that prioritised the harmonious relationship between livestock and the natural environment. The composition is structured around a shallow stream, where two cattle are depicted mid-crossing. The foreground features textured rocks and a fallen tree trunk, which guide the viewer's eye toward the water.
Behind the stream, a dense cluster of trees occupies the middle ground, their foliage rendered with precise, varied line work that captures the density of the canopy. To the left, a classical structure is partially visible, hinting at the influence of the Italian countryside on Reinhart's aesthetic. The sky is filled with soft, rounded clouds, providing a sense of atmospheric depth that balances the darker, more detailed foliage below.
Reinhart was a central figure among the German artists living in Rome during the early nineteenth century. His approach to printmaking often involved a rigorous attention to the physical characteristics of the terrain, from the jagged edges of stones to the delicate leaves of the trees. This etching reflects his technical proficiency with the needle, using cross-hatching and varied line weights to create shadows and light without the need for colour. The scene is quiet and orderly, typical of the period's interest in idealised rural life. By focusing on the interplay of light across the water and the textures of the forest, Reinhart creates a balanced view that invites close inspection of his technical skill. The print remains a clear example of the European etching tradition, where the artist's hand is visible in every mark, providing a tactile quality to the printed image.
