A 1971 etching by Dutch artist Sipke Huismans, featuring geometric abstraction and gestural mark-making in a monochromatic composition.
Centrum is a work by the Dutch artist Sipke Huismans, created in 1971. This etching demonstrates the artist's engagement with geometric abstraction and the physical properties of the printmaking process. The composition is anchored by a central circular motif, which is bisected by linear elements that suggest a sense of rotation or mechanical movement. The interplay between solid black forms and textured, etched surfaces creates a tension between depth and the two-dimensional plane of the paper.
Huismans employs a variety of mark-making techniques within this small-scale work. The lower portion of the print features dense, scribbled inscriptions and gestural lines that contrast with the more controlled, geometric shapes above. This juxtaposition of structured form and spontaneous, almost calligraphic mark-making is characteristic of the artist's approach to printmaking during this period. The inclusion of text-like elements at the base of the image adds a layer of ambiguity, inviting the viewer to consider the work as a form of visual communication or a coded system.
The print is executed in a monochromatic palette, which allows the focus to remain entirely on the relationship between shape, line, and texture. The stark contrast between the dark, inked areas and the white paper ground gives the work a graphic quality. Huismans often explored the boundaries of traditional printmaking, and this piece reflects his interest in the experimental possibilities of the medium. The work is signed and titled in pencil, consistent with the standard practices for limited edition prints of the era. It serves as an example of the mid-twentieth-century Dutch approach to abstract printmaking, where the artist's hand remains visible through the deliberate manipulation of the etching plate.
