A detailed etching by Salvator Rosa depicting the mythological encounter between the goddess Ceres and the hero Phytalus.
This etching by Salvator Rosa depicts a scene from classical mythology involving the goddess Ceres and the hero Phytalus. According to the myth, Phytalus offered hospitality to Ceres during her search for her daughter, Proserpina. In gratitude, the goddess gifted him the first fig tree. Rosa captures the encounter with his characteristic focus on dramatic narrative and atmospheric setting.
The composition features a kneeling Phytalus looking up towards the standing figure of Ceres. She holds a branch, symbolising the gift of the fig tree. The background is composed of gnarled, expressive trees and a sense of wild, untamed nature, which is a hallmark of Rosa's graphic work. The etching technique allows for a range of tonal values, from the delicate lines of the figures' drapery to the deeper, more textured marks used to define the foliage and the rugged terrain.
Rosa was a prolific printmaker, and his etchings often explored themes of philosophy, history, and mythology. This work demonstrates his ability to integrate human figures into a natural environment, creating a sense of scale and drama. The Latin inscription at the bottom provides context for the scene, identifying the figures and the nature of the gift bestowed by the goddess. The print reflects the Baroque interest in emotional engagement and the depiction of legendary narratives through a sophisticated use of line and shadow. By focusing on the interaction between the divine and the mortal, Rosa creates a quiet yet powerful moment of exchange. The work remains a fine example of seventeenth-century Italian printmaking, showcasing the artist's technical skill and his narrative approach to classical subjects.
