This landscape by Henri-Edmond Cross captures the essence of the Mediterranean with its pointillist technique and harmonious colour palette. 'Chaine des Maures' showcases the artist's mastery of Neo-Impressionism, depicting a sun-drenched scene with individual strokes of colour.
Henri-Edmond Cross, a French painter born in Douai, was a significant figure in the Neo-Impressionist movement. He, along with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, developed a style characterised by the use of small, distinct dots of colour, known as pointillism. This technique aimed to achieve a greater degree of luminosity and colour mixing than traditional methods. Cross's work often depicted idyllic scenes of the Mediterranean coast, reflecting his move to the south of France in 1891. His paintings are celebrated for their harmonious colour combinations and serene atmosphere. 'Chaine des Maures' exemplifies Cross's mature Neo-Impressionist style. The painting depicts a sun-drenched scene, likely in the Massif des Maures region of southern France. The landscape is rendered using small, individual strokes of colour, creating a shimmering effect. Hues of yellow and green dominate the foreground, representing fields and vegetation, while the hills in the background are depicted with touches of red, purple, and blue. A figure with a horse adds a sense of scale and human presence to the scene. The overall impression is one of light and tranquility, capturing the essence of the Mediterranean landscape.
