A Pointillist lithograph by Henri-Edmond Cross, 'Champs Elysées' captures a tranquil scene on the famous Parisian avenue, rendered in delicate dots of colour.
Henri-Edmond Cross, a French painter and printmaker, was a significant figure in the Neo-Impressionist movement. Born Henri-Edmond-Joseph Delacroix, he adopted the name Cross to distinguish himself from the Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix. Cross, along with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, refined the Pointillist technique, characterised by small, distinct dots of colour applied in patterns to form an image. This method aimed to achieve maximum luminosity and colour mixing in the viewer's eye. 'Champs Elysées' exemplifies Cross's application of Pointillism. The lithograph depicts a leisurely scene in the famous Parisian avenue. Figures are rendered with careful placement of coloured dots, creating a soft, dappled effect. The composition includes seated and standing figures, a horse-drawn carriage, and the leafy trees of the Champs-Élysées. The colours are light and airy, dominated by blues, yellows, and greens, evoking a sense of a sunny afternoon. The overall effect is one of relaxed elegance and the pleasures of Parisian life.
