A masterful wood engraving by Timothy Cole, reproducing Peter Paul Rubens' iconic portrait, 'Le Chapeau de paille'.
This wood engraving by Timothy Cole reproduces the famous portrait by Peter Paul Rubens, known as 'Le Chapeau de paille'. Cole, a master of the American wood engraving school, gained recognition for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the precise, linear language of the woodblock. His work was often commissioned by magazines such as The Century to bring European masterworks to a wider public audience.
The print captures the subject, Susanna Lunden, wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat adorned with feathers. Cole employs a variety of cutting techniques to represent the textures of the fabric, the softness of the feathers, and the play of light across the sitter's face. The background remains relatively simple, allowing the focus to remain on the figure and the specific details of her attire. By using varying densities of lines, Cole achieves a range of greys that mimic the chiaroscuro of the original painting.
Timothy Cole spent many years in Europe, working directly from original canvases to ensure the accuracy of his interpretations. His approach prioritised the fidelity of the reproduction over the expressive freedom of the engraver. This piece demonstrates his technical precision, particularly in the rendering of the lace collar and the subtle shading of the skin. The signature 'T. Cole Sc. Nov. 1894' appears in the lower right corner, marking the date of this specific execution. As a fine art print, this work offers a view into the nineteenth-century practice of reproductive engraving, a medium that bridged the gap between historical painting and mass-media dissemination before the widespread adoption of photographic halftone processes.
