A striking colour woodcut by William Nicholson, depicting the literary figure of Rochester from his 1900 Characters of Romance series.
William Nicholson was a master of the woodcut medium, known for his economy of line and his ability to capture character through minimal visual information. This print, depicting the brooding figure of Rochester from Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, is part of his 1900 portfolio titled Characters of Romance. The series demonstrates his transition from the bold, flat poster designs he created with James Pryde as the Beggarstaff Brothers towards a more nuanced, painterly approach to printmaking.
In this composition, Nicholson employs a restricted palette of black, white, and a muted ochre background. The figure of Rochester is rendered with heavy, vertical hatching that suggests the texture of his heavy coat and the sombre mood of the character. The horse, partially visible to the right, is integrated into the dark mass of the figure, creating a unified silhouette against the light ground. Nicholson avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the posture and the sharp, angular features of the face to convey the internal conflict associated with the literary figure.
The print reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the turn of the century, where the influence of Japanese woodblock prints met the British tradition of illustration. Nicholson's technique involves carving blocks to create areas of solid colour, which he then overlays with fine, etched lines to provide depth and shadow. This method allows for a graphic clarity that remains effective even at a distance. The work is a fine example of his ability to distil complex literary archetypes into singular, iconic images. It remains a classic representation of his graphic output, showing his skill in balancing negative space with bold, expressive mark-making.
