A refined seventeenth-century portrait etching of Charles de Valois, Duc d'Angoulême, by the French master Jean Morin.
This portrait of Charles de Valois, Duc d'Angoulême, is a fine example of the work of Jean Morin, a French printmaker active in the seventeenth century. Morin was known for his technical mastery of etching combined with the precision of the burin, a method that allowed for subtle tonal gradations and a soft, painterly quality in his portraiture. The subject is depicted within an octagonal frame, a common device in the period that provides a sense of architectural structure to the composition.
The sitter, Charles de Valois, was a prominent figure in French court life. He is shown wearing armour, which denotes his status as a military leader and member of the nobility. The attention to the texture of the metal, the lace collar, and the facial features demonstrates the artist's ability to render material reality with clarity. Morin often worked from paintings by contemporary masters, in this instance after Philippe de Champaigne, whose influence is visible in the dignified and restrained presentation of the sitter.
Technically, the print relies on a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the contours of the face and the reflective surfaces of the armour. The light source is directed from the upper left, creating a gentle modelling of the features that gives the portrait a sense of physical presence. The surrounding frame contains the sitter's titles in Latinate script, which serves to formalise the image as a record of rank and identity. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the French aristocracy during the mid-seventeenth century, capturing the gravity and composure expected of a high-ranking official of the era.
