A portrait of Charles I, King of England, by Daniël Mijtens. The painting captures the king in regal attire, standing with the symbols of his authority.
This portrait by Daniël Mijtens depicts Charles I, King of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Mijtens, a Dutch Golden Age painter, was among the most important portraitists working in England during the early 17th century. He served as court painter to both James I and Charles I before being supplanted in popularity by Anthony van Dyck. The painting presents Charles I in full-length, standing with an air of regal authority. He is clad in a red suit with gold detailing, a large white ruff, and high white boots. To his left, the crown and sceptre rest on a table covered with a green cloth. A classical column and draped curtain form the backdrop, suggesting a grand interior. The composition is formal, befitting the status of the sitter, with attention paid to the textures and details of the fabrics and jewels. Mijtens's style is characterised by its realism and attention to detail, reflecting the influence of Dutch painting traditions.
