Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was a French artist who is considered one of the most influential painters in the history of art. His work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavour to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. Cézanne's often repetitive, exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognisable. He used planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form the field as a whole. *Château Noir* is one of a series of paintings that Cézanne made of this subject between 1900 and 1906. The Château Noir, or Black Castle, is a building near Aix-en-Provence in southern France. Cézanne's painting shows the castle almost hidden among the trees. The building is rendered in ochre and yellow tones, while the surrounding foliage is depicted in shades of green and blue. The sky is visible through the branches of the trees, and the overall effect is one of dappled light and shadow. The composition is structured by strong vertical and horizontal lines, and the brushwork is loose and expressive.
