A 1787 woodblock print by Shiba Kōkan depicting an early hot air balloon, from his scientific treatise on Western technology.
This woodblock print originates from the 1787 publication 'Kōmōzatsuwa' (Chats on Novelties of Foreign Lands), authored and illustrated by the polymath Shiba Kōkan. During the Edo period, Japan maintained a policy of national isolation, yet Kōkan sought to document Western scientific advancements through his study of Rangaku, or Dutch learning. This specific page depicts an early hot air balloon, a subject that fascinated Kōkan as he attempted to reconcile European technological progress with his own observations.
The illustration demonstrates the artist's interest in Western perspective and technical drawing, which differed significantly from traditional Japanese artistic conventions of the time. The balloon is rendered with clear, precise lines, focusing on the structural components of the craft, including the envelope, the rigging, and the gondola. Beside the image, Kōkan provides descriptive text in Japanese, explaining the mechanics of the balloon to his readers. This work serves as a record of the intellectual curiosity present in late 18th-century Japan, where scholars like Kōkan acted as conduits for information arriving via the Dutch trading post at Dejima.
As a print, the piece exhibits the characteristic aesthetic of Edo-period book illustration. The composition is functional, prioritising the clarity of the diagram over decorative flourish. The text and image share the page in a balanced arrangement, typical of scientific treatises of the era. By reproducing this print, we offer a glimpse into the history of global exchange and the early efforts of Japanese intellectuals to understand the wider world through the medium of print. The work remains a primary source for those interested in the history of science, the development of Japanese print culture, and the cross-cultural transmission of ideas during the Tokugawa shogunate.
