A calico cat lies protectively next to a small white kitten in this animal painting by Jean-Baptiste Oudry. Red poppies add a splash of colour to the composition.
Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) was a French Rococo painter, draughtsman, and engraver. He is particularly well known for his naturalistic animal paintings and his hunting scenes, which found favour with the French aristocracy. Oudry served as a professor at the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, and he also designed tapestries for the Beauvais and Gobelins manufactories. This painting, whose title translates to 'Cat and Kitten, and Dog and Parrot', depicts a calico cat lying protectively next to a small white kitten. The pair are set against a neutral background, with a low wall or plinth behind them. Red poppies grow near the wall, adding a splash of colour to the composition. The titular dog and parrot are absent from the scene, leaving the viewer to imagine their presence beyond the frame. Oudry's skill in rendering the textures of fur and foliage is evident, as is his ability to capture the alert expression of the mother cat.
