A 1969 screenprint by Edward Ruscha, featuring his iconic Standard Oil station motif paired with a surreal, floating olive.
Edward Ruscha produced this screenprint in 1969, revisiting his recurring subject of the Standard Oil petrol station. The composition employs a sharp, low-angle perspective that stretches the architecture across the frame. The structure is rendered with clean lines and a restrained palette, creating a sense of stillness that contrasts with the functional nature of the building. The inclusion of a single olive, floating in the upper right corner, introduces an element of absurdity and displacement typical of Ruscha's approach to American iconography.
Ruscha often utilised the vernacular of the American roadside, treating commercial buildings as formal objects. By isolating the petrol station against a gradient sky, he removes the context of a busy thoroughfare, forcing the viewer to consider the geometry and typography of the scene. The word 'STANDARD' is presented in a bold, sans-serif typeface, functioning as both a label and a graphic element. This work belongs to a series of prints that explore the repetition of motifs and the intersection of commercial design with fine art practice. The flat application of colour and the precise registration of the screenprint process align with the aesthetic of the period, while the surreal addition of the olive disrupts the expected realism of the architectural study. This print demonstrates the artist's interest in the intersection of language, image, and the mundane aspects of the Western American experience.
