A diptych from 'Flowers of the Four Seasons' by Kitagawa Utamaro, featuring irises and cherry blossoms. This woodblock print exemplifies the delicate lines and subtle colours characteristic of ukiyo-e botanical illustration.
This diptych, titled 'Cherry Blossoms and Irises', is from the illustrated book 'Flowers of the Four Seasons' by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806). Utamaro was a leading Japanese printmaker and painter known for his ukiyo-e works, especially his bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). He captured the essence of Edo period (1603-1868) culture. His prints are characterised by their refined lines, subtle colours, and poetic sensibility. This print features irises on the left panel, their slender green leaves and brown-purple flowers rendered with delicate precision. The right panel shows cherry blossoms, their yellow petals and green leaves forming a graceful, curving composition. The background is a pale, neutral tone, allowing the floral subjects to stand out. The composition is flat and ornamental, typical of ukiyo-e prints, with a focus on decorative arrangement and pattern. The thin lines and muted palette contribute to the overall sense of refinement and elegance.
