Description
A robust still life by Ilya Mashkov, featuring cherries arranged in bowls and on a wooden table, rendered with thick, expressive brushwork.
Ilya Mashkov was a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group, an association of Russian artists who rejected academic traditions in favour of a more tactile, expressive approach to painting. This work, dating from 1910, demonstrates his interest in the physical presence of objects. The composition focuses on a collection of cherries arranged in a pedestal bowl, a smaller glass dish, and scattered across a wooden surface. Mashkov employs a heavy application of paint, building up the surface to give the fruit a tangible, almost sculptural quality. The light catches the rounded forms of the cherries, creating subtle variations in tone that suggest their ripeness and texture. The background remains dark and indistinct, which pushes the objects forward and forces the viewer to engage with the immediate materiality of the fruit. The colour palette is dominated by deep reds and warm browns, contrasted against the cool, pale tones of the central ceramic vessel. Unlike the delicate, refined still lifes of the nineteenth century, Mashkov’s work possesses a raw, energetic quality. He was influenced by the post-impressionist experiments of Paul Cézanne, particularly in his use of simplified forms and a structured approach to space. However, Mashkov brings a distinctively robust sensibility to the canvas. The arrangement appears casual, yet it is carefully balanced to guide the eye across the various groupings. This print captures the thick brushwork and the earthy, grounded atmosphere of the original oil painting, offering a clear view of Mashkov's technique during his most experimental period.
