A detailed Meiji-era woodblock print by Utagawa Masanobu documenting the diverse acts of Chiarini's Circus during its tour of Japan.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Masanobu depicts the spectacle of Chiarini's Circus, a travelling troupe that toured Japan during the Meiji period. The work is composed as a triptych, presenting a wide array of circus acts against a uniform, light green background. The artist captures the fascination of the Japanese public with Western entertainment, documenting performers, animals, and acrobatic feats that were novel to the audience of the time.
The composition is organised into distinct vignettes, each showing a different aspect of the performance. On the left, equestrian displays dominate, with riders performing stunts on horseback. The centre section features more equestrian work alongside human acrobats. The right panel focuses on animal acts, including a cage containing tigers and a large elephant performing a balancing act on a barrel. The figures are rendered with clear, bold outlines, typical of late nineteenth-century woodblock printing, which prioritised legibility and narrative clarity over atmospheric depth.
Textual elements are integrated throughout the print, providing labels for the various acts. These inscriptions serve to guide the viewer through the busy scene, functioning much like a programme for the event. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the contrast between the pale green ground and the saturated reds, blues, and browns of the performers' costumes and the animals. This print provides a record of cultural exchange, showing how Western circus traditions were assimilated and presented within the visual language of Japanese printmaking. The work is a document of the rapid modernisation and internationalisation occurring in Japan during the late 1880s, reflecting the curiosity surrounding foreign visitors and their exotic displays.
