A sixteenth-century Italian woodcut by Nicolò Boldrini, depicting a child guiding a bull through a pastoral setting.
This woodcut by the Venetian printmaker Nicolò Boldrini depicts a pastoral scene featuring a young child guiding a bull. Boldrini is recognised for his technical skill in translating the painterly qualities of the Venetian school into the medium of the woodcut. His work often reflects the influence of Titian, with whom he collaborated on several notable prints. The composition employs a clear foreground and background, typical of the period, where the figures are set against a simplified natural environment.
The line work demonstrates the characteristic approach of sixteenth-century Italian woodcutters, using parallel hatching to define form and shadow. The child, holding a branch, stands to the right of the bull, which occupies the centre of the frame. The tree to the left provides a vertical anchor for the composition, while the distant hills and clouds suggest a wider, open space. The use of a light-toned ground colour, common in chiaroscuro or tinted woodcuts of the era, adds a sense of depth and atmosphere to the printed image.
Boldrini’s prints were produced during a period when the demand for reproductive prints was increasing across Europe. These works allowed for the wider dissemination of compositions by major painters, making them accessible to a broader audience. This specific print captures a quiet, observational moment, typical of the genre scenes that gained popularity during the Renaissance. The attention to the anatomy of the animal and the posture of the child shows a careful study of natural forms, rendered with the economy of line required by the woodblock technique. The print remains a representative example of the collaborative nature of print production in Venice during the mid-sixteenth century.
