A mid-century abstract work by Jack Bush, featuring geometric forms set against a gestural, atmospheric background.
Childhood is a work by the Canadian painter Jack Bush, dating to the mid-twentieth century. The composition demonstrates the artist's transition from representational subjects toward the abstract forms that defined his later career. Bush employs a muted, earthy palette as a backdrop, against which he places stark, geometric shapes in primary colours. These forms, including a red angular structure and two rectangular frames in cyan and white, sit atop a loosely rendered ground. The background suggests a wooded area or park, executed with quick, gestural brushwork that contrasts with the deliberate, flat application of the geometric elements.
This piece captures a specific moment in Bush's development, where he began to experiment with the spatial relationships between colour and shape. The juxtaposition of the dark, atmospheric background and the bright, artificial-looking frames creates a sense of tension. The work avoids literal representation, instead using these shapes to evoke the memory or feeling of a playground or a space associated with youth. The visible brushstrokes and the raw quality of the paper surface provide a sense of immediacy. Bush, who was associated with the Painters Eleven group in Toronto, often sought to balance emotional resonance with formal rigour. In this work, the interplay between the organic, dark background and the rigid, colourful foreground elements invites the viewer to consider the structure of memory itself. It is a study in how simple forms can anchor a composition while simultaneously disrupting the viewer's perception of depth and space.
